I’m going on an 11 hour flight pretty soon to California (exciting, right?!) and I thought I would give you a few pointers of how I keep myself busy during a long-flight!
I’m quite used to travelling back and forth from London to Jamaica, which is an 8/9hour journey. So, I’m quite used to long-haul flights. However, the thought of an 11 hour flight scares me a little, but its gonna be okay guys!
Catch some Zzz’s
Why not use this opportunity to catch up on lost sleep? I always make sure i’m super cosy to fly, so I always pack my flight (compression) socks , blanket and eye mask. I might just invest in a travel cushion too! Some may find it difficult to sleep on flights, and may choose to use a sleeping aid (tablets/melatonin), or Lemon Balm capsules (Holland & Barrett) to calm your anxiety.
Another idea to keep yourself occupied on a long flight would be to read a book. Unfortunately, I don’t read as much as i’d like to. However, on my next flight I will be reading ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne which should keep me feeling positively inspired. If you aren’t prepared for your holiday you could buy a book in duty free and read up about the country you are visiting. Alternatively, you could buy a magazine of your interest.
Get on with Work
I’ve always seen people with their laptops/journals doing work on planes and I was like..why? Now I understand. Time is money. Get on with that work you’ve been putting off for so long so that you can enjoy your vacation! If you’re self employed, bring a notebook to jot down any ideas that come to you, plan ideas & projects. If you’re in the blogging world, you could bring your laptop and write some blog posts or edit some Youtube videos (make sure your laptop is fully charged though!).
I never understood why people put so much effort into pampering themselves on flights. On an 11 hr flight, your skin will definitely need some TLC. After watching a few youtube videos, I’ve seen that the common things are: moisturiser, drinking water & sheet face masks to restore hydration for your skin. Airplanes drain you of moisture, due to the cold temperatures and extreme air conditioning.
If you’re on a long haul flight, it’s likely your airline will have ‘In Flight Entertainment’ which is basically TV/Movies. Sometimes they have games on the screen, or you can track where the plane is at and how close you are to your destination. Definitely make the most of these, time will fly by. Especially if your watching a movie as long as Avatar.
If you’re travelling alone, you might get lonely so why not say hi to the person sitting next to you? Since you’re going to be invading each others personal space for a few hours, you might as well introduce yourself. You might find that they are of use to you (contacts/networking), or they might even be a native of the country you are visiting. They could give you some ideas and let you know whats good!
Perhaps you’re a gaming nerd and want to use this time to level up. Bring along your Nintendo, PSP or even phone to keep yourself entertained during the flight.
If you’re a foodie, bring along some snacks to munch on in-between flight meals. It’s best to avoid anything that might upset your stomach on the plane such as anything greasy/fatty that may cause indigestion. Also, beware of carbonated drinks, as these could make you bloat too and make you feel uncomfortable. Personally, I would bring some dried fruit, nuts/seeds or a granola bar to keep my mouth busy in-flight.
I hope these tips make your flying experience more enjoyable and comfortable!
